@Jodie151279 usually the fax machine owners manual will tell you. some faxes are different. However, i have a hp2140 i use at home and you face the pages away from you and upside down. So while the paper (printed side) is facing you, turn it upside down, then flip it over and insert it in the tray. type your fax number in a press send. It then will copy the documents and spit them out as it does each page. once it completes all the pages, then it will begin to call the other fax.

The tray where you put the docs on will show you whether the docs should be placed “Face up or down.
And to sorrion: That screechy noise is actually the fax machines communicating. It’s part of their Communication Protocol”
But what I want to know is which direction do I face the paper that I want to fax. I don’t want my receiver to get a blank page. Do I face the writing side towards me or away from me?

The beeping is not the fax machines communicating with each other. Its communicating to you that its communicating to the other printer. Electronics don’t use sound to communicate, they use light.
